Gilbert & George Artwork

Free art! This could be a new digital trend. Via The Gaurdian: an original work by British artists Gilbert and George is being made available to anyone who wants it - from 11.30pm, for 48 hours only.

Chicken-Eating Spider

I would never want to hunt down giant 12 inch tarantulas in the Amazon, but Martin Nicholas armed with his "spider cam" digs in deep with his "Monsters of the Forest" video.

I added a variety of texture to this one including a 3rd party texture plugin called Nagel Papers. The shadows and composition work well as all the branches blur into the thickness of the stickery!

pinkflowers

pinkflowers, originally uploaded by Tim Noonan.

I was trying out the macro setting on my Olympus SP-500UZ this afternoon in High Park. It was a good day to cycle around looking for shots and the south end of the park was not crowded. These pink flowers have a very nice softness to to them and I can see how the depth of field for the shot was extremely shallow.

Darkspider

Here is a little different style. I went to see Spiderman 3 tonight and I really enjoyed the emotional over-tones. The character is pushed into dark realms and retains his values in the end. Anyway, I used a variety of cloning stamps and f-x brushes in painterIX to create this image.

Today at school the children seemed unusually hyperactive. Fellow colleagues(I've heard it before) suggested that the full moon affects children's behaviour. Well, I think that is something worth celebrating! Tonight I listened to Bob Dylan and Lucinda Williams, they both have current releases which are good.

Sunday morning on my way to the studio I saw these cats in a petfood store window. Good thing I had my camera and I'm in the reflection!

Modelled from my computer sketch this 50X54" acrylic on canvas has some interesting moves!

Lee Bontecou Link

A link to cool abstract constructionist and transformationist sculptor Lee Bontecou. The American born sculptor had a major in-depth retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in 2004. Her unique surreal vision mixes organic forms and mechanical structures.

Toronto is 'city of future'

Toronto has been named runner-up in a British financial magazine's ranking of North America's Cities of the Future. Apparently Toronto has the best quality of life...and the best artists, ha, ha!

Not for Sale at P.S. 1

Via nymag.com. A review of a painting exhibit at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center NYC, in which the curator Alanna Heiss contests the marketplace. Writer Jerry Saltz claims the show is passable because of the inclusion of the artists statements explaining why they still own the works. There is a great quote by Gerhard Richter included in the backstory.

Life-supporting planet discovered

Via The Daily Telegraph. A new Earth like planet has been discovered 20.5 light years away orbiting a small red star. The first discovery of it's kind, an exoplanet exhibiting the conditions suitable to evolving life, makes Gliese 581c a prime target in the search for extraterrestrial life.

These dark cloudy weather days seemed to influence my mood for this drawing.

A strange abstract space with a floating head.

The New Abstraction

Via ARTnews. A decent article on the renewed interest in abstract painting. Barbara A. MacAdam examines several ideas of abstraction in current art, offering glimpses into some artistic processes and use of technological tools.

The blues look cool! I love it and printed a copy to take to my painting studio. I imagine the steel bands of the sculptures as large drippy brush strokes.

A sparrow pirched outside her nest inside an interesting sculpture. It is a beautiful capture!

Today at school I started the comic-art club for juniors. 3 boys attended. I showed them some resources including Stan Lee's book on drawing comics the Marvel way and we all practised drawing heads. Later tonight I coloured this scanned page from my sketch book.
