Rideau Canal named a global gem

Via the Globe. The 175 year old Rideau Canal has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Rideau Canal is a 202-kilometre chain of lakes, rivers and canals stretching from Ottawa south to Kingston, on the shore of Lake Ontario. It's the only canal from the continent's canal-building era that is still operating along its original line with most of its original structures intact.

Did you know that the Canal was formed by lumberjack legend Big Joe Mufferaw?
"Now Joe had to portage
from the Gatineau down
to see a little girl
he had in Kempville town
He was back and forth so many times to see that gal
the path he wore
became the Rideau canal"
