Matta was a very interesting painter, a bridge in a way between the surrealists and the american abexers. We saw a show of his work not so long ago - I think it was in Minneapolis. He wasn't the most inventive painter, and not all his stuff holds up to my eyes, but quite a number of his works, particularly the bigger ones have a lot to offer.

Breeze mentioned that Matta was exiled from Paris during WWII. His work helped establish the Americans as "free" painters which aided the political cold war.
