Installing Richard Serra
Via NYT. Mr. Serra’s indispensable installer Joe Vilardi discusses how steel riggers install 30 tons of cor-ten curved steel plates to within fractions of an inch on the MoMA's second floor. The installation of "Sequence" took three weeks and the 40-year sculpture retrospective of Richard Serra opens June 3 at the Museum of Modern Art.

I really appreciate the ambition of a guy like Serra to make a 30-ton piece. Why piss around when you can go for the gusto, eh? There are quite a lot of artists who need to have this kind of big scope - I think of Smithson, Christo, Matta-Clarke, Walter de Maria, Dennis Oppenheim, and so on. These are artists who like to think big then make a big production out of making it happen.
